Finding the Right Manufacturer for your ‘Made in America’ Product

From prototyping to high volume production, there is a lot to consider when finding the right fit for your project. The hard work and time engineers and product managers put into their products should be top priority at the manufacturer you chose to mass produce your cable & harness assemblies and/or electromechanical assemblies. The most important aspects of developing a relationship with a manufacturer is open lines of communication.

Manufacturers have problem solving skills

If you have an issue that you cannot pinpoint, engineers at a manufacturer can assist you in finding where the problem is. If they cannot, they are probably not the right choice for your product. When finding electrical manufacturers in the United States, it is important to be on the same mindset and have access to the engineers during planning and development phases before the production line starts moving.

Engineers in the field have a mutual understanding of troubleshooting; this comes in handy when dealing with domestic manufacturers because there is no language or cultural barriers that keep from getting the job done.

Make a plant visit

Visiting a manufacturing plant and meeting the engineers and quality control will give you peace of mind that your project is in the right hands.

On your visit, it enables you to meet your potential business partners and tour the facility to meet the production staff that will be manufacturing your product. Videos and pictures of facilities are nice, but there is nothing like a first-hand experience.

Have a firm idea or project drawings in-hand before contacting a manufacturer

Contract manufacturing with an OEM (original equipment manufacturer) is one of those things where they can bring your product idea to life. However, the engineers at the plant cannot make the idea for you. Be ready to discuss functionality, sizes and specifics that are needed for your end product.

Lastly, you need to know your target market. If you are selling a finished product to the military, they require most components be USA made. Sourcing the right supplier is key to both the manufacturer’s success and most importantly, your success. Open communication and access to the entire process will eliminate headaches when it comes to choosing the right manufacturer for your next project.
